Paddy's Catnip

Paddy's Catnip

Paddy discovered catnip today. Catnip is from the mint family and about 80% of cats react to this plant in strange ways although kittens and elderly cats don’t seem to be affected by it.

Cats that are affected will usually become playful and in paddy’s case the results were typical..

Catnip has been used for thousands of years as a medicine and catnip tea is said to be very good for digestion. The herb has a fairly strong but pleasant smell and looks good in any garden.

If you can’t get your hands on some real Catnip then why not check out Video Catnip. This is a video for cats to watch on TV.

…and a kick!

Here’s another video designed for cats to amuse themselves. In our experience most cats don’t tend to watch much television but it turns out it’s just because the programming is so bad! Paddy does seem to like documentaries but has also been known to attack the odd mouse cursor.

Road testing the catnip turned out to be a pretty tiring event…

Catnip can be grown very easily from seeds and makes a great herb on your kitchen window sill. The seeds will germinate in most climates but you can use cotton wool and a plastic cover to keep them warm in cold climates.

If you can’t grow fresh catnip, you can buy catnip from Amazon and they will deliver it to your door.

Many cat toys include catnip inside hidden pouches to encourage cats to play – You could probably even plant some catnip inside your cat’s favorite toy for fun!

The Mealy Bugs again

Paddy's pot

Paddy's pot

Paddy thought it would be prudent to check the brussels sprout plants again after last weeks mealy bug outbreak.

Paddy's mealy bugs

Paddy's mealy bugs

All the plants were fine except for one that had a couple of curled up leaves that had missed being sprayed with Safer Brand 3-In-1 Insect Control Organic Garden Spray. (Last week we also visited some other organic solutions for mealy bugs)

This small colony would be enough to seed a new attack on the other plants so it seems that thorough inspection and spraying are the only way to keep them in check.

We noticed that the plants that were attacked are still not back to normal. Some of the leaves show signs of stress and the new growth on the plant has been stunted.

On perhaps an even worse note we pulled up some more carrots to find them looking like alien egg pods!

You can see why we thought we might have root knot nematode in the garden bed.

The carrots are truly horrifying. Not only are they bent and gnarled but they have lumps on them resembling worts.

Close inspection of the garden bed where the carrots were growing show a lot of root work from a nearby rosemary plant. This section of the garden was dug out to about 1 foot deep and replaced with good soil and it seems the rosemary bush took a liking to it.

This complex root system is probably preventing the carrots from growing normally.
