Paddy's ants

Paddy has seen a fair bit of ant activity in the garden lately.

The videos show two types of serious ant activity in the garden.

Last time it was crazy swarms of bees, now it seems the ants want a slice of the action.

Paddy says it could be the plague and part of the four horsecats of the apocalypse due some time in 2012!

The ants have been carrying soil up the plant and dumping it in piles along the stem and leaves

When we cleared the sand off we could see mealybug/aphid like creatures living on the stem.

It’s like the ants have been creating a mini tree-house for the aphids. We’ve seen mealy bugs and aphids before but not in the soil..

You can see in the video that the ants seem to be digging nests at the base of several plants.

Paddy says its a good idea to have something happy in each post and drew our attention to this jurassic looking fern.

A cucumber plant was also under attack from similar looking aphids with a few ants monitoring them.

One cucumber plant has a tiny resident spider and that seems to have helped it escape attack

We pulled up an eggplant the ants were attacking and the roots of the plant were covered in a white mold

So Paddy’s doing his best to catch the ants at it and I’ve got the pyrethrum on standby…

Paddy's Garden

In his last post, paddy mentioned he was playing a game of chance by leaving the cucumbers on the vine, knowing how many pests we have here in Paddy’s Garden.

Well by the time we got them off the vines they had gone quite yellow which indicates that the cucumbers will be quite bitter. We tried one of the greener onces and can confirm it was very bitter in flavor.  pew pew!

Paddy has been noticing quite a bit of bee activity in the garden.

At first we just thought it was our good combination of flowers and vegetables attracting a good amount of bees..

It seemed they were just after a drink and our water saving pots we use in Paddy’s Garden held more than enough for a few bees and a plant…

Now Paddy is saying there is just too many bees. I had a look in all the usual spots such as the BBQ and roof eves for a junior bee hive, but Paddy says he knew all along – the bees are trying to set up shop in the bottom of 3 of the water saving pots.

We may have to convince the bees to use somewhere else but it’s sad because bees are so important to growing food and there are so few places in suburbia for them to live.

Paddy does look like he wants to play with the bees and I’ve seen some of them do some low passes over him, so it may take some effort to live harmoniously with a bee nest Paddy’s Garden

Paddy and I have been playing a kind of dutch auction with Mother Nature.

We planted a variety of cucumbers and after some really colorful flowers we could see three juicy cucumbers growing on the vines.

Our previous experiences with tomato-eating mice showed that while we were both content to wait for the cucumbers to develop further – it would only be a matter of time before one of the ‘contestants’ got hungry and made a grab for the cucumbers.
